Trunk recruitment in relation to shoulder movement
Humans, generally, coordinate movement to perform tasks at minimum cost. In the attached research article, 26 participants were taken to an experiment where they would reach for a tennis ball with the thumb side of the hand - loaded and unloaded. You will find out that the trunk is recruited when the weight of the arm becomes too heavy for the shoulder joint to handle. This is the CNS’ way to reduce energy expenditure. This demonstrates the importance of keeping a mobile T-spine.
